Honey

Meet Honey, she is our first Sammie’s Senior Dog Sanctuary resident! We received a call from our local vet that a senior dog had been brought in for euthanasia. The Doctor was told that Honey’s owner had been placed in hospice care and the family wanted Honey euthanized because she was old, incontinent and no one was willing to care for her. After a talk with the DVM, the family agreed to surrender her. Upon examination by our vet, her skin was very irritated and she was suffering from hair loss due to a horrible flea infestation. She is an arthritic little gal that will require ongoing pain medication and therapies to help her get around, but other than that Honey is in good shape for her age. What a shame it would have been to euthanize her when she is still so full of life.

We brought her home the day before Thanksgiving and she has become quite comfortable with her new life. We are certain she was an only dog child, but is learning the ways of her new pack. She is smart and loving, she loves to eat and play, her tail is always wagging. Although not well versed in using a doggie door, she is sure to tell us when she needs to go out, she has not had one accident in the house. Despite her arthritis, she is a spry girl who is estimated to be 9-10yo. Honey will live the rest of her life with us being loved and cared for like every senior dog should.

Marlo

Meet Marlo, she is our second resident at Sammie’s Senior Dog Sanctuary.

Our daughter was looking for a cat to rescue when she found Marlo at our local shelter. Marlo was picked up as a stray and in terrible shape. She was clearly neglected, and for too many years. She’s been suffering from a never ending flea infestation which has left her without much hair on her hindquarters/tail and more than likely was used to breed many litters. Despite how miserable her past was, she has not let that define her. When we went to inquire about her, we were greeted by an old girl looking for a little love. We witnessed her sweetly interacting with humans, dogs, and cats. Mind made up, we knew she had to come home with us.

Once she was ours, she was examined by our vet to address several concerns. She is estimated to be 13yo. She is not spayed, she has a sizable mass on her right flank, her eyes are cloudy, her teeth are a nightmare, and of course her horrible skin condition. She will require weekly medicated baths and several rounds of steroids to get her skin healthy. Through an FNA, it was determined she has a mast cell tumor. Once her skin improves, she will be spayed and her tumor will be removed and sent out to be biopsied. She has cataracts due to old age. Her teeth are extensively ground down, Dr. is pretty certain it’s due to biting her skin for so many years. Marlo is exactly why we knew we had to open a senior dog sanctuary. An old dog who’s been treated poorly for most of its life, who will FINALLY know what it feels like to be loved and cared for unconditionally. Marlo is in permanent foster care with our daughter who lives next door.

We hope that you will consider donating to help with her medical needs. With your help, we can make Marlo’s remaining days the best she’s ever had, she deserves to know comfort, love, and peace. Our daughter calls her our big, giant Christmas miracle~that she is!!
